Light of Oneness: The Wisdom of Guru Nanak

November 3, 2025

Welcome to the 30th issue of Sikh Echoes — where Sikh wisdom, history, and spirit meet today’s reflections.
Each issue illuminates our journey through the teachings of Gurbani.
Thank you for being here and reflecting together.

Each issue follows a simple format:

  • 1 verse to reflect on
  • 1 word to deepen understanding
  • 1 hymn (or shabad) to anchor the soul

Each year, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak invites reflection on one of humanity’s most transformative voices for spiritual unity and ethical living. Born in 1469, Guru Nanak’s teachings transcended the boundaries of religion and culture. He urged humanity to look beyond rituals and divisions, to discover the Divine presence within all life.

His message—of equality, truthfulness, service, and remembrance—remains profoundly relevant today. At its heart lies a simple insight: when we recognize the same Light in all beings, compassion and justice naturally follow. This Gurpurab, we pause not merely to celebrate a historical figure but to reawaken a living consciousness of Oneness.

1. Verse to Reflect on

Gurmukhi
ਏਕੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਏਕਸ ਕੇ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਹਾਈ ॥
Hindi
एक पिता एकस के हम बारिक तू मेरा गुर हाई ॥
Transliteration
Ek pita ekas ke ham barik tu mera gur hai.
Translation
There is one Father, and we are all His children; You are my Divine Teacher.
Reflection
This verse captures Guru Nanak’s revolutionary vision of unity. In a world divided by identity and hierarchy, he declared the shared divine parenthood of all beings. The verse gently dissolves separation and reminds us that equality is not an abstract ideal—it is the natural truth of existence. Recognizing this shared origin reshapes how we relate to others, inspiring empathy, respect, and a sense of common belonging.

2. Word to Deepen Understanding

Ik Onkar (ੴ | इक ओंकार)

Ik Onkar is the cornerstone of Guru Nanak’s teaching and the opening phrase of the Mool Mantar—the foundational verse of Guru Granth Sahib. It expresses that all of creation springs from and is sustained by one Infinite Source. In this worldview, spirituality is not confined to temples or rituals; it is lived in awareness that the same Divine essence flows through all forms of life.

3. Shabad to Anchor the Soul

This week’s shabad (at the end of the newsletter) teaches that everything moves within Hukam—the Divine Order that shapes all life. Peace arises when we accept this truth with awareness, letting go of ego and resistance. Understanding Hukam brings harmony with the flow of existence. When we see the Divine working through all things, we live with balance, humility, and quiet joy.

Translation
By the Divine Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described.
By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained.
By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are received.
Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander endlessly.
Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.
O Nanak, one who understands His Command does not speak in ego. ||2||
In the 2nd Pauri of Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak unfolds the principle of Hukam—the Divine Order underlying all existence. Every form, experience, and destiny operates within this cosmic balance. To live in Hukam is to recognize that life flows through a vast intelligence beyond human control.
Understanding Hukam transforms our response to life’s ups and downs. Acceptance is not surrender to fate but awakening to reality as it is. When we truly comprehend Hukam, ego (haumai) dissolves, and peace arises from alignment with the Divine flow.
