December 15, 2025
Welcome to the 36th issue of Sikh Echoes — where Sikh wisdom, history, and spirit meet today’s reflections.
Each issue illuminates our journey through the teachings of Gurbani.
Thank you for being here and reflecting together.
Each issue follows a simple format:
- 1 verse to reflect on
- 1 word to deepen understanding
- 1 hymn (or shabad) to anchor the soul
The month of Poh (15 December – 13 January), the tenth in the Nanakshahi calendar, arrives with the coldest days of the year. Yet, beyond the harsh chill of winter, Poh carries the heaviest weight of remembrance for Sikhs worldwide. It is a month marked by solemn reflection on the supreme sacrifices of the four Sahibzaade, Mata Gujri, and countless Sikhs who stood unwavering in their faith, choosing martyrdom over compromise. Poh reminds us that courage, devotion, and love for the Divine persist even amidst immense suffering, guiding us to find spiritual warmth in the coldest trials.
1. Verse to Reflect on
Gurmukhi
Hindi
पोखि तुखारु न विआपई कंठि मिलिआ हरि नाहु ।
मनु बेधिआ चरनारबिंद दरसनि लगड़ा साहु ।
Transliteration
Pokh tukhar na viyapee kanth milia har naah.
Man bedhia charan-arbind darshan lagra saah.
Translation
In the month of Poh, the cold does not touch those embraced by the Lord.
Their minds are transfixed by His Lotus Feet, attached to the Blessed Vision of the Divine.
Reflection
Even in the harshest winters of life, the Guru’s grace shields the soul. This verse calls us to anchor ourselves in devotion, letting faith provide warmth when worldly trials feel unbearable.
Guru Arjan Dev | Guru Granth Sahib | Ang 135
2. Word to Deepen Understanding
Pokh/ ਪੋਖ / पोख – Nourishment, sustenance, protection.
In the spiritual context of Poh, it reminds us that divine care sustains the soul even in the harshest trials. Just as nature struggles in the cold, the soul finds life and warmth in union with the Divine.
3. Shabad to Anchor the Soul
This week’s shabad (at the end of the newsletter) teaches that even in the coldest and most challenging seasons of life, the Divine is always present, guiding, protecting, and filling every heart with light and understanding, when we remain mindful and devoted.
