In November, Sikhs around the world pause to remember Guru Tegh Bahadur — Shrist Di Chadar, the Protector of Religious Freedom. His shaheedi was not only an act of supreme sacrifice but a declaration of spiritual sovereignty and compassion. Standing against tyranny, he offered his life so others could live in faith and dignity. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s courage reminds us that truth is not merely spoken — it is lived, even at the highest cost.

ਜਉ ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਖੇਲਣ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥
ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰਿ ਤਲੀ ਗਲੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਉ ॥
ਇਤੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੈਰੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

Hindi
जउ तउ प्रेम खेलण का चाउ।
सिरु धरि तली गली मेरी आउ।
इतु मार्गि पैरु धरीजै।
सिरु दीजै काणि न कीजै।

Transliteration
Jau tau prem khelan ka chaau,
Sir dhar tali gali meri aau.
It maarag pair dhareejai,
Sir deejai kaan na keejai.

Translation
If you desire to play the game of love,
Step onto my path with your head in your palm.
When you place your feet on this path,
Offer your head and hesitate not.

Reflection

This verse from Guru Nanak Dev embodies the spiritual bravery that Guru Tegh Bahadur lived. True love for the Divine demands the courage to surrender everything — ego, comfort, even life itself — for truth and righteousness. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom was this verse in action.

2. Word to Deepen Understanding

Shaheed (ਸ਼ਹੀਦ | शहीद)

Martyr; one who sacrifices life for truth and faith.

To be a shaheed in Sikhi is not to die for power or identity, but to affirm the eternal principle of dharam — righteousness, compassion, and justice. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s shaheedi was the defense of these universal values, transcending religion and time.

3. Shabad to Anchor the Soul

This week’s shabad (at the end of the newsletter) teaches that worldly pursuits are fleeting and cannot bring lasting fulfillment. True success comes from meditating on the Naam and seeking the company of the spiritually wise. By living in alignment with our highest values, cultivating courage, and embracing devotion, we too can navigate life’s challenges with integrity. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s life reminds us that standing for truth, even at great personal cost, leaves a legacy far greater than anything material achievements can offer.

ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੁਰੀਆ ॥
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਰੀਆ ॥
ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਜ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਕਾਮ ॥
ਮਿਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਭਜੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ॥੧॥
ਸਰੰਜਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੁ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਨ ਕੈ ॥
ਜਨਮੁ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

भई परापत मानुख देहूरिया।
गोबिंद मिलण की यह तेरी बरिया।

मिल साधसंगत भज केवल नाम। ||1||

जप तप संजम धरम न कमाया।
सेवा साध न जानिया हर राया।

Bhaee paraapat manukh dehuria
Gobind milan ki ih teri baria
Avar kaj terai kithai na kaam
Mil sadh sangat bhaj keval naam ||1||
Saranjam lag bhavajal taran kai
Janam britha jaat rang maya kai ||1|| Reharo
Jap tap sanjam dharam na kamaia
Seva sadh na jania har raia
Kahu Nanak ham neech karamma
Saran pare ki rakhahu sarma ||2||4||

Translation

You have been blessed with this human body.
This is your great opportunity to meet the Lord of the Universe.
Other efforts of yours will not work anywhere.
Join the Saadh Sangat (the Company of the Holy) and meditate on the Name alone. ||1||
Make that effort to cross the ocean of suffering.
This human birth is spent in vain, in the love of Maya. ||1|| Pause ||
I have not practised meditation, penance, self‑restraint or righteous living;
I have not served the Holy, nor do I know the Lord, my King.
Says Nanak, my actions are lowly.
O Lord, I seek Your Sanctuary; please preserve my honor. ||2||
