Welcome to the 32nd issue of Sikh Echoes — where Sikh wisdom, history, and spirit meet today’s reflections.
Each issue illuminates our journey through the teachings of Gurbani.
Thank you for being here and reflecting together.
Each issue follows a simple format:
- 1 verse to reflect on
- 1 word to deepen understanding
- 1 hymn (or shabad) to anchor the soul
This week we remember the GurGaddi of Guru Gobind Singh. It marks a profound moment in Sikh history — the passing of spiritual authority to a leader who would reshape the destiny of the Panth. After the shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadur, young Gobind Rai rose to shoulder the responsibility of guiding a people in turmoil.
His Guruship was not defined by comfort or quiet devotion, but by clarity, courage, and an unshakeable commitment to righteousness. He molded the scattered strength of the Sikhs into disciplined spirit, transforming grief into resilience. His ascension reminds us that divine leadership is rooted in humility, surrender, and unwavering resolve.
1. Verse to Reflect on
Gurmukhi

Transliteration
Deh siva bar mohe ihae subh karman te kabahun na taron.
Na daron ari so jab jae laron nischai kar apni jeet karon.
Aru sikh hon apane hi man kau ih lalach hau gun tau ucharon.
Jab aava ki audh nidan banai at hi ran mai tab joojh maron.
Translation
Grant me, O Lord, this blessing - that I never shrink from righteous deeds.
Let me not fear the foe when the battle comes; resolve I shall win by my own effort.
And let me instruct my own mind, free of greed, to utter only virtues.
And when my hour of final act arrives, then let me fight on the field and die brave.
Guru Gobind Singh | Dasam Granth | Chandi Charitar, 231
Reflection
This verse reflects the spiritual and moral foundation upon which Guru Gobind Singh accepted the GurGaddi. It is a prayer for moral integrity, fearlessness, and unwavering commitment to righteousness. The verse transforms courage into a spiritual discipline; rooted not in ego, but in divine purpose.
2. Word to Deepen Understanding
Jeet (ਜੀਤ | जीत)
The word jeet means “victory” — but in this context victory is not merely over external adversaries. It is victory over the lesser self: fear, passivity, complacency, attachment. Guru Gobind Singh’s vision asks us to stand upright, to not yield, to triumph in our interior landscapes so that our outer lives reflect that inner resolve.
3. Shabad to Anchor the Soul
This week’s shabad (at the end of the newsletter) teaches that spiritual love transforms suffering into strength. Guru Gobind Singh’s path was full of trials, yet devotion turned every hardship into an opportunity to deepen connection with the Divine. The shabad reminds us that the real measure of spiritual life is not ease, but the steadiness of our remembrance, even in difficulty.
