Unyielding Spirit: Honoring the Shaheedi of Baba Deep Singh

November 10, 2025

Welcome to the 31st issue of Sikh Echoes — where Sikh wisdom, history, and spirit meet today’s reflections.
Each issue illuminates our journey through the teachings of Gurbani.
Thank you for being here and reflecting together.

Each issue follows a simple format:

  • 1 verse to reflect on
  • 1 word to deepen understanding
  • 1 hymn (or shabad) to anchor the soul

This week, we bow our heads in remembrance of Baba Deep Singh (1682–1757), a towering figure of courage, devotion, and unwavering faith. A scholar-saint and warrior of the Khalsa, Baba Deep Singh exemplified what it means to live and die in complete alignment with the Divine Will. When he took up arms to defend the sanctity of Harmandir Sahib, it was not for conquest, but for reverence, love, and duty. His shaheedi (martyrdom) reminds us that true strength flows not from anger or pride, but from deep spiritual conviction and surrender to Waheguru’s hukam (divine order).

1. Verse to Reflect on

Gurmukhi
ਸੂਰਾ ਸੋ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੀਐ ਜੋ ਲਰੈ ਦੀਨ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
ਪੁਰਜਾ ਪੁਰਜਾ ਕਟਿ ਮਰੈ ਕਬੂ ਨ ਛਾਡੈ ਖੇਤ ॥
Hindi Transliteration
सूरा सो पहिचानिए जो लरै दीन के हेत।
पुरजा पुरजा कटि मरै कबू न छाड़ै खेत।
Transliteration
Soora so pahichanie jo larai deen ke het.
Purja purja kat marai kaboo na chhadde khet.
Translation
A true warrior is one who fights for righteousness;
Even when torn apart, never abandons the field of duty.
(Guru Gobind Singh | Dasam Granth)
Reflection
This verse embodies Baba Deep Singh’s spirit. When his head was severed in battle, he continued to advance toward Harmandir Sahib, upholding the Guru’s sanctity with each step. His example teaches that true bravery lies in unwavering commitment to truth and justice, even in the face of death.

2. Word to Deepen Understanding

Shaheed (ਸ਼ਹੀਦ | शहीद)

Derived from the Arabic root shahada—to witness—shaheed in Sikhi signifies one who bears witness to Truth through ultimate sacrifice. A shaheed is not merely one who dies in battle, but one who lives and dies with the Naam (Divine remembrance) permeating every breath. Baba Deep Singh's life transforms this word from concept to living example.

3. Shabad to Anchor the Soul

This week’s shabad (at the end of the newsletter) teaches that walking the path of love for the Divine demands total surrender. It is not a journey of half-measures or comfort—it calls for the offering of one’s ego, fears, and attachments. True devotion begins when we are ready to give everything, even our own sense of self, for the sake of Truth. This spirit of fearless surrender is what Baba Deep Singh lived and breathed, turning divine love into action and sacrifice.

Offer Your Ego: True surrender is not in grand gestures, but in letting go of pride, fear, and control. When the head bows before the Divine, peace arises.

Reflection
